Doge Queen Kabosu Turns 18 with a Statue to Honor Her Legacy

Kabosu, the cherished Shiba Inu synonymous with the beloved Doge meme and the meme-based cryptocurrency, Dogecoin, celebrated her 18th birthday on Thursday.

In a global show of appreciation, devoted fans of the Doge phenomenon collaborated to unveil a physical statue in honor of Kabosu. The statue, revealed in Sakura City's Furusato Square (Japan), a place frequently visited by Kabosu and her owner, marked a joyous occasion.

The initiative, spearheaded by the online community 'Own The Doge', united Doge enthusiasts worldwide, many of whom collectively own the Doge meme NFT.

The previous year witnessed Kabosu's admirers successfully raising funds to materialize this statue, with ambitious aspirations to potentially place it on the moon.

As part of the festivities, supporters congregated, singing “Happy Birthday” to Kabosu while expressing their adoration for the remarkable Shiba Inu.

The meme-based crytocurrency, Dogecoin (DOGE), was launched in December 2013 and originally intended to be a joke, but it has since become a popular cryptocurrency with a large and active community. It has been used to fund a variety of charitable causes and has even been accepted as payment for goods and services by some merchants.

The Dogecoin Foundation, closely associated with the cryptocurrency, expressed their excitement, stating:

“Raising funds to commemorate Kabosu when she had a health scare last year was an incredible time. The Doge & Dogecoin communities from around the internet came together. Amazing to see the statue become a reality on Kabosu’s 18th birthday!”

Atsuko Sato, the proud caretaker of Kabosu, first encountered the beloved Shiba Inu at an animal shelter in November 2008. Reflecting on Kabosu’s background, Sato disclosed that she originally came from a puppy mill and was abandoned alongside 19 other Shiba dogs when the mill ceased operations.

Currently boasting over 486,000 devoted fans on Instagram, Kabosu has undeniably become one of the most celebrated dogs globally.

The journey to internet stardom began when Sato spontaneously captured images of her eight-year-old Shiba Inu. Little did she anticipate the overwhelming response these pictures would garner, ultimately catapulting Kabosu into internet stardom.

Initially, Sato's aim was simple – to share endearing pictures of her cherished pet online. However, when the Doge meme featuring Kabosu’s face gained traction, it took Sato by surprise. In her words:

“It felt very strange to see her face there. It was a Kabosu that I didn’t know.”

Sato had been sharing photos of Kabosu on a blog she established in June 2009. Eventually, these images found their way to the popular online platform Reddit. From there, the meme's widespread popularity and cultural impact blossomed, forever altering Kabosu’s life.
