Lugano, Switzerland Enhances Payment App with Polygon Integration

The city of Lugano, Switzerland, has upgraded its MyLugano payment app by incorporating Polygon PoS. This update introduces a specialized section for the app's 30,000 users, granting access to a multichain cryptocurrency wallet.

Designed for more experienced users, this Polygon (MATIC) integration provides access to a cryptocurrency wallet similar to MetaMask. This dedicated section features ckBTC (Crypto Key Bitcoin Tokens), described on MyLugano's official website as an innovative digital asset based on the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) technology.

MyLugano goes beyond basic functionality, offering users access to various decentralized applications (dApps) and the ability to participate in a loyalty circuit using LVGA, Lugano's stablecoin. As part of Lugano's cryptocurrency initiative, a new non-fungible token (NFT) collection has been introduced.

This unique collection is inspired by a physical artwork by Yuri Catania, gradually transforming 2,000 paper flowers into real ones over time. The NFT collection ensures the artwork lives on through the MyLugano platform.

Switzerland, especially Lugano, has been actively embracing blockchain technology, aligning itself as a cryptocurrency hotspot in Europe. Zug canton, known for enabling tax payments in bitcoin (BTC), is another notable example. Liechtenstein, situated between Switzerland and Austria, has been a crypto pioneer since 2019, with recent plans to facilitate bitcoin payments.

While the Alpine regions have been leading crypto adoption, the rest of Europe is catching up. The European Central Bank's (ECB) development of a digital euro and German banks seeking crypto custody licenses indicate a broader trend of increasing interest in cryptocurrencies across the continent.
