Brave Wallet Introduces Native SegWit Bitcoin Feature, Previews BRC-20 and Ordinals Support

Experience enhanced compatibility with a broader range of Bitcoin addresses as Brave Wallet unveils its latest offering.

Brave Browser's newest update (version 1.63) introduces a significant enhancement: users can now effortlessly create and manage Native SegWit Bitcoin accounts, as announced by the company. Looking ahead, Brave's team is gearing up to unveil support for BRC-20 tokens and Ordinals later this year. Brave's team noted:

"Later this year, we’ll add support for more Bitcoin account types, which will allow users to store BRC-20 tokens and Ordinals in Brave Wallet — and make all of these features available across all desktop and mobile versions of Brave."

Brave highlights bitcoin's resilience amidst challenges since its inception, establishing itself as a robust asset class. The recent green light for several spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds in the US signals increasing institutional interest and adoption.

Moreover, as non-fungible tokens and decentralized finance gain momentum, bitcoin's utility extends beyond its initial role as a peer-to-peer payment method and store of value.

The latest offering from Brave aims to provide users with lower transaction fees and enhanced error detection compared to other Bitcoin account types. Brave Wallet now seamlessly supports sending and receiving transactions from all Bitcoin address types, including Legacy, Nested SegWit, newly added Native SegWit, and Taproot.

James Mudgett, VP Web3 Products at Brave, outlined the objective behind the expansion of features, stating:

“Our aim with Brave Wallet is to offer the most secure and privacy-considerate software wallet for everyday use. As the Bitcoin ecosystem expands with new apps and services, Brave Wallet will be there to put security and privacy first, to help keep users’ assets safe.”

Following the launch of Native SegWit Bitcoin accounts, Brave's roadmap includes integrating shielded Zcash transactions into Brave Wallet, in partnership with Zcash and the Filecoin Foundation, as outlined in the announcement.
