UK Judge Rules Against Craig Wright's False Claims of Being Bitcoin Inventor

A UK judge has definitively refuted Dr. Craig Wright's assertions of being the creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, and owning copyright to the Bitcoin whitepaper.

In a significant legal decision, UK Judge James Mellor has unequivocally debunked Dr. Craig Wright's long-standing claims of being the mysterious figure behind Bitcoin, known as Satoshi Nakamoto.

For years, Wright has propagated the notion that he is the mastermind behind Bitcoin's creation, going so far as to assert copyright over the Bitcoin whitepaper. However, Judge Mellor's ruling has decisively put an end to these unfounded claims. Quoting the judge's remarks, Block CEO Jack Dorsey summarized the ruling:

"I will make certain declarations which I am satisfied are useful and are necessary to do justice between the parties. First, that Dr Wright is not the author of the Bitcoin whitepaper. Second, Dr Wright is not the person who adopted or operated under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto in the period 2008 to 2011. Third, Dr Wright is not the person who created the Bitcoin System. And, fourth, he is not the author of the initial versions of the Bitcoin software."

Despite Wright's persistent assertions, there has been a chorus of critics casting doubts on his claims. Since 2021, Wright has been embroiled in a legal feud with the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA), backed by Jack Dorsey, and a consortium of Bitcoin Core developers.

The latest courtroom battle, which concluded this week, commenced in a UK courtroom on February 5th. In a bid to preempt further legal proceedings and mounting expenses, Wright attempted to settle the intellectual property dispute with COPA in January. However, COPA swiftly rebuffed this proposal, publicly dismissing it on X.
